Kidd’s Stone

I love a good mystery. Cape Breton is filled with stories and myths of days gone by. One I have recently heard involves the Mira River, pirates, a secret shipyard from the 1800’s and a stone which pays homage to Captain Kidd.

We are issuing a Moosebait challenge. Anyone who can find and post, to our Facebook page, a photo of the alleged stone reading, “Captain Kidd died without mercy.” Gains bragging rights and will go down in moosebait history.

Solved by Liam Hussey

31841_10150195695790355_229088_nProps go out to Liam Hussey, who posted this great photo of the Kidd Stone. He wouldn’t let on to it’s location so it is still a mystery to me.

GOOD SHOW LIAM, YOU ARE A TRUE MOOSE.

Here are a few pieces of the puzzle to get you started:

WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND – pg288

“At Glen Margaret, BG, in Cape Breton there was a rock marked simply enough with three lines and the words, “Kapt Kit”. A few hundred miles away at Marion Bridge, near Fortress Lunenburg, is another tombstone shaped rock bearing the legend ‘Captain Kidd died without mercy.’ ”

CAPE BRETON’S MAGAZINE – pg43

“They knew about the shipyard which had ceased operation around 1810; between 1810 and 1820 it had been briefly used as a sawmill, but abandoned because of ghosts!”

“About 15 miles from Mira Gut down the Mira there is a carved stone memorial to Captain Kidd, obviously carved by someone sympathetic to him since the inscription reads ‘Deprived of mercy 17O..’ ”

So there you go, 15km down the Mira, stone reading, “Captain Kidd died without mercy.” How is that for a challenge?

CAUTION: Remember the rules: Do not break any laws, play safe, and always tell someone where you are going before venturing off on a Moosebait challenge.
